The history of Gerizim

The word “Gerizim” descends from the name of a mountain of Samaria which is about 3,000 feet above the Mediterranean Sea. The ancient city of Shechem is located between Mount Gerizim and Mount Ebal, on the way to Jerusalem. Mount Gerizim is located on the northern part of Jerusalem, in the West Bank city of the Nablus.

Mount Gerizim is known to celebrate the event of ceremonies instructed by Moses. The mount has been blessed and the fertility of the land is prosperous. According to the Bible, the Gerizim has many other meanings such as a mountain where the tribes of Philistines lived and some say the mountain cut into two. The place is known to be a blessed place chosen by God, and the Samaritans build a sacred temple on the Mount Gerizim, during the 5th Century. Now only some ruins can be found on the mountain, and it is considered as a Holy Place for the Christians.
